North East Rivers Festival

Shared by |tags, , , ,

October is a big month for Tasmania's north east region, with the annual North East Rivers Festival coming into full swing from October 19 to 28.

Ten events will be held over the same number of days in a vibrant cultural festival that celebrates the importance of the rivers in the north-east and draws in local communities to commemorate the occasion.

Music and dance will be the feature of the first weekend, with the Country Music Concert, Springfield Bush Dance and Vineyard Concert.

The Country Music Concert will feature musicians from Tasmania including Terry Simpson, Bert and June Maher, Steve Irwin, Cheryle Holmes and Gary Penjeley – so if you love your country music, make sure you're there!

The music continues into the night with the Springfield Bush Dance, with Launceston-based group the Bottom Pub Ceilidh Band providing swinging tunes with a variety of instruments including the guitar, accordion, viola, fiddle, bouzouki, banjo, recorder and bass guitar.

Get your dancing shoes on for the event, with tickets $10 for adults, $5 for children and students and $20 for a family.

On Sunday, the Pipers Brook Vineyard will play host to Tasmanian country-rock-pop group The Wolfe Brothers.

Bring your picnic blanket and pack some lunch ready for some great country music to get you through your Sunday afternoon.

Tickets are $20 for single or $35 for a couple – children under 16 are free with entertainment for the kids provided on the day.

Other fun events such as the school fair, fishing competition and men's shed markets – selling fresh produce and crafts – will also take place during the first weekend.

The final days of the festival will usher in a golf challenge – with over $2500 in prizes! – the popular Derby River Derby and the Bridport 10 Fun Run.

The Derby River Derby is a highlight event of the festival, with a myriad of activities taking place on the day including medieval sword fighting combat, the Derby Bike Challenge, wood chopping demos, Bridsport Surf Life Savers display, The Duck Race, Flatland BMX tricks and lessons and many more!
