If you're a keen fisherman, heading down to Tasmania for some game fishing could be the perfect holiday destination - get amongst it and bait your next big prize! Continue reading →

If you're a keen fisherman looking for your next challenge, Tasmania is home to more than 20 national game fish records and could be where you catch your next prize.

The game fishing waters stretch from the north east, past St Helens, all the way down to the Tasman Peninsula.

Charter a boat from anywhere along this vast stretch of coast and within 30 minutes, you'll be put right in the middle of serious fishing territory.

You may get the chance to encounter a number of marine species, including striped marlin, broadbilled swordfish, mako sharks, and bluefin tuna.

But one of the most eagerly sought after fish in Tasmanian waters is the southern black bream, which can grow to well over three kilograms. These are well within reach of any keen fisherman, with Little Swanport and Ansons Bay being the hotspot for catching them.

The best part is you don't need a license for saltwater fishing in Tasmania, and a recreational license is needed only if you're planning on catching abalone, rock lobster, scallops, or if you intend on using a graball, mullet or beach seine net.

So head on down to Tasmania, charter a boat and prepare yourself for a serious fishing frenzy!

When one thinks of whisky, images of frosty distilleries in Ireland and Scotland are conjured up in the mind. Any whisky connoisseur worth their weight in grain understands that some of the world's best single malts come from those regions – but what about Tasmanian whisky?

The Nant Distillery is located near Bothwell, Tasmania, and is home to some of the most refined whisky in the state. Each individual cask is matured, decanted and hand-bottled on the estate as a single cask maturation.

The barrels used are traditional American and French oak which have previously held port, sherry and bourbon, imparting characteristics that make Nant whisky unique.

From spicy Christmas cake attributes of the port casks to the creamy vanillas of American bourbon, all three of these single malts are a palatable and decadent flavour experience which Tasmania is proud to call its own.

Daily tastings of the whiskies are open to the public, affording you the chance to enjoy something uniquely Tasmanian washing across your palate.

There are also daily guided tours of the distillery open to the public, which takes you through the whisky distillery and old Nant water mill, built in 1857 and a part of the region’s rich history.

These tours cost $15 per person and are available from 11:00 till 13:00.

The premium adventure race known as the Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge will take place in the wild wilderness of Tasmania's west coast at the end of the year.

The sold-out event traverses over 350 kilometres of Tasmania's stunning terrain in an adrenaline-pumping multi-sport race.

Competitors will battle it out across the course, running, trekking, mountain biking and paddling through Tasmania's remote west coast for their share of $30,000 in prize money.

The challenge's course designer John Jacoby said that Tasmania has the perfect environment to meet his requirements of needing a course that is fun but challenging "relatively easy".

Mr Jacoby hinted at some of the places the challenge will visit this year, including harsh alpine terrain, wild coastal environments, rainforests and waterfalls.

He added that he thought Tasmania was such a great location for the challenge because the island had "so much variety", in such a small area.

"It is wild but also close to civilization. The parks are well managed and there is great scope for a range of activities. Even having a variable and unpredictable climate can make for a great adventure."

Mr Jacoby had some tips for those taking part in the challenge this year, adding that participants should train with long endurance-based efforts rather than short-speed sessions, train in all conditions (rain/hail/snow/heat) and practise their race-day hydration/nutrition regime in training.

If you're heading to Tasmania as a competitor – or even as a supporter – then there are a wide range of experiences that you can enjoy during your stay!

A seven-day adventure guide is available on the Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge website, highlighting top places and attractions to visit, including Strahan, the 'world-famous' Franklin Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and a number of gourmet delights in Latrobe and Launceston. You won’t have to battle it out – they will, but you will enjoy some of the areas in which the event will take place.

The historic city of Hobart will be bursting with colour when the famous Swisse Colour Run sweeps through the town in 2014!

The five-kilometre colour run is billed as the "happiest 5k on the planet", with the event taking off in the U.S. last year and set to sweep across Asia, Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand from 2013.

This unique paint race requires all participants to gather at the starting line in white t-shirts, where they will then set off on a fun journey getting pelted with various coloured powders.

The untimed colour run celebrates "healthiness, happiness, individuality, and giving back to the community" – so don't miss out on this anticipated event when it rolls into Tasmania!

An official race date for the Colour Run 5K Hobart hasn't been confirmed yet, but you can keep updated with the latest news and developments by providing your details on the Colour Run website.

At least 7,500 entries are expected in Hobart, said Colour Run spokeswoman Ashlee Munting (via The Mercury), with plans for up to 10,000, awaiting the council's approval.

The Gold Coast hosted their first colour run over the weekend (June 2), with the sold-out event attracting more than 11,000 keen runners.

"The atmosphere on the track was really relaxed and we hopped, skipped and jumped our way to the end," Brisbane resident Seb Robbins said via Gold Coast News.

Colour Run Australia's national event manager Luke Hannan added that the colour is a "tool" for people to lose their inhibitions, enjoying a "completely new element" of themselves.

Participants have the option of racing solo or forming a 'Colour Team' of four or more members.

The Colour Run is for everyone, regardless of fitness ability, age, shape and size – make sure to get in quick when registrations become available so that you don't miss out on the race of the year!

If you're looking for a picturesque tropical escape in Tasmania, look no further than the stunning Wineglass Bay, located on the Freycinet Peninsula.

A piece of pristine coastline on Tasmania's east coast, Wineglass Bay's dazzling white sand and deep, sapphire ocean are enough to make even the most stubborn of worries disappear.

It's the perfect location for surfing, sailing, snorkelling, fishing, taking a nice cool dip, or simply soaking up some rays of the bright Australian sunshine.

The Bay is just a short walk from the camping ground at Coles Bay and involves an uphill climb to a rocky outlook, followed by a gentle descent down to the coast.

If you're interested in seeing the entire peninsula, the award winning Freycinet Experience Walk is a four-day guided tour that includes stops at a number of the bays throughout.

The area was home to the Oyster Bay tribe of Aboriginals for at least 20,000 years and some of the tracks on the walk are original trails made by the inhabitants all that time ago.

The trails cover about 30 kilometres and are the perfect way to experience the full richness of the Freycinet Peninsula and Wineglass Bay!

A Tasmanian National Parks pass is needed to explore the Freycinet National Park, its walks and its scenery.
